The victory was overshadowed though by a head injury sustained by defender Matt Simpson.
Simpson went up for a 50/50 header with a Steyning opponent with just over 30 minutes played, but came off worse as he hit the floor and lay prone.
United captain Adam Davidson was first to arrive at Simpson's aid as he comforted the United youngster.
After a few minutes, Simpson was able to make his own way off the pitch and was substituted for Tyler O'Callaghan.
As the teams were heading to the dressing room for the half time break, Simpson collapsed and an ambulance was immediately called for.
Two Rapid Response Units and a Paramedic Unit were quickly on the scene, with Matt being assessed before being taken to Brighton Hospital
Following a scan, it was discovered that Matt had suffered a fractured skull.
Fortunately, there is no displacement of any bone at all, so the fracture should heal completely by itself with no long term effects.
Matt will hopefully be discharged from hospital in the next 24 hours.
Our best wishes go to Matt at this time and we hope he has a speedy recovery
The club would also like to thank everyone associated with Steyning Town, the match officials; Anthony O’Brien, Alex Howard, Abbas Ali Rajwani and Hailsham Town goalkeeper Tom Betts for their assistance in helping Matt.
In terms of match action, it was a poor start as United were behind after just 22 seconds when some kamikaze defending allowed Craig Knowles to fire past Phil Hawkins to give the home side the lead.

The lead would last until the 37th minute when Scott Taylor struck a 25 yard free kick into the bottom corner.
Less than two minutes later, the lead was doubled as Callum Hart struck his first goal of the season after the ball richoted off both posts and into the back of the net.
Three further goals in a lengthy first half stoppage time due to the injury sustained by Simpson followed, with Ashley Jarvis curling home from the edge of the box before Hart got his second of the night, with Kane Penn then making it 5-1 with a deflected effort.
The second half was heavily delayed due to the situation involving Simpson and eventually restarted at 21:10 with both sides agreeing to finish the match.
As you would expect, there was a somewhat sombre atmosphere around The Shooting Field and the game became of insignificance.
Despite that, Scott Taylor was fouled inside the area and had a chance to add to his tally from the spot, but his powerful spot kick was turned over the bar by Ben Rose.
Taylor would make amends soon after though as he struck a second free kick to make it 6-1 in the 84th minute and complete the scoring
